The warm, often dry summers followed by mild, sometimes wet winters in areas like Escalon, Ripon, and Salida create seasonal pressures that drive ants indoors seeking shelter, food, and moisture. Local geographical features, including proximity to the Stanislaus River and agricultural lands, contribute to moisture sources and diverse food opportunities, making our homes and businesses attractive targets.

• Food Sources: Crumbs, spills, pet food, and even tiny sugar crystals are irresistible to foraging ants.
• Moisture: Leaky pipes, condensation, and damp areas in basements or crawl spaces provide essential water for ant colonies.

Types of Ants Commonly Found in California’s Central Valley

• Carpenter Ants

  Identification: Larger than most ants, typically black, red, or a combination. They do not eat wood but excavate tunnels to build nests, creating smooth, clean galleries within wooden structures.

  Behavior & Risks: Often found in areas with moisture-damaged wood, such as around leaky windows, roofs, or plumbing. Their tunneling can compromise the structural integrity of your home over time, leading to significant damage if left unaddressed. Look for piles of sawdust-like material (frass) near wood.

• Pavement Ants

  Identification: Small, dark brown to black ants, about 1/8 inch long. They have two nodes on their petiole and grooves on their head and thorax.

  Behavior & Risks: Commonly nest under sidewalks, driveways, and building foundations. They enter homes through cracks in concrete slabs and foundations, foraging for a wide variety of foods, including sweets, meats, and greasy items. While not destructive, they are a nuisance, contaminating food and surfaces.

• Odorous House Ants

  Identification: Small, dark brown to black ants, about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. When crushed, they emit a distinctive, rotten coconut-like odor.

  Behavior & Risks: These ants are highly adaptable, nesting both indoors and outdoors. They are attracted to sweets and will establish strong trails to food sources. They can be particularly challenging to remove due to their ability to form multiple satellite colonies.

• Argentine Ants

  Identification: Small, light to dark brown ants, about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. They move in distinct trails and are known for their aggressive behavior towards other ant species.

  Behavior & Risks: Argentine ants form massive colonies with multiple queens, making them incredibly difficult to control. They are highly attracted to sweet foods and can quickly infest homes and businesses, contaminating food and surfaces. Their large numbers can be overwhelming.
